Why drawdown, the largest fall from a peak, matters (especially near your goal)

The closer you get to your wealth goal, the more a severe drawdown can derail your plans, even if your long-term returns remain excellent.

Sequence-of-returns risk: if a major correction hits within 5 years before or after you start drawing down, withdrawals amplify losses and your portfolio may never recover.

An anti-fragile allocation, with a low maximum drawdown, acts as a buffer. It protects your transition capital and lets you ride out downturns without having to sell productive assets at a loss.

Reducing drawdown before you reach your goal isn't a constraint: it's probably the most important decision of your journey.
